On a dark and rainy February night, the greatest concern on the Duke of Westlake's mind is which of his conquests he'll sneak off to meet. The rake hardly expects a family emergency . . . or to be set upon by highwaymen who will leave him with a life-threatening wound.
Bella Tichley has long avoided the amusements of the ton. Then the blue-eyed beauty tends to Westlake after finding him injured on his horse, and she is enchanted by one of London's most eligible bachelors. But how could she ever dream that her innocent act of kindness will place her reputation in danger of utter ruin . . . and her untouched heart in imminent peril of devastating passion?

Their gazes met in the reflection of the mirror, and Bella saw a smile lurking at the corner of the Duke's mouth. The warmth of his breath was on her nape, as he stood very close behind her. His long fingers rested very lightly on her neck, and a shiver went down her arms as she stood, as if frozen, in front of him.
His piercing gaze held hers in the mirror, and she found that she had no desire to pull away. Again, an exquisite shiver danced down her spine . . .
