A PROMINENT LODGE MAN
Special to The Tribune
Cherrytree, March 5--Porter Kinports, almost 81 years old, prominenty associated with the growth of Cherrytree, where he lived 60 years, died at his residence at 12:30 o'clock last night.
Porter Kinports was born in Frankstown, Pa., September 6, 1831. During the greater part of his life he was interested in the lumber business, owning large tracts in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He was one of the originators of the St. Lawrance Boom & Manufacturing company, of Ronceverte, W. Va., and was President of the First National Bank of Cherrytree from the time of its incorporation in 1903 until his death. Mr. Kinports took an interest in the development of Cherrytree, but never took much part in politics. He was a School Director for some time and was a member of the M. E. Church. Many Masons and Odd Fellows will remember the deceased who was a member of the Noble Lodge of Masons, Curwensville; Moshannon Commindery, Phillipsburg; Williamsport Consistory, of Williamsport; Jaffa Temple, Altoona, and Odd Fellows.
Mrs. Kinports, who was Miss Margartet Mahaffey, of Clearfield County, survives with the following children: Boyd W. Kinports and J. "Porter Kinports, son of John and Mary Rench Kinports born at Frankstown, near Holidaysburg, Pa., Sept. 6, 1831 early boyhood his family moved to that section of Cambria co contiguous to Canoe Place, now called Cherry Tree, when his brothers enganged in farming and the mercantile and lumber business, he helping them in the outdoor work on the farm and work. At a suitable age he went to College at Lewisburg, now Bucknell University, and would have graduated with the class of 1856 had not the illness of his brother Gideon demanded his presence at home. This illness followed by death, years later the death of his brothe David, left him and his brother James the sole surviviing male members of the family. He assumed charge of the business, which he successfully conducted throughout.
In 1859 he married Margaret Mahaffey, and lived in the farmhouse near Cherry Tree until 1876, when he moved his family to the village. He was highly esteemed in his locality among business associates, as a man of ability, honor and integrity. With him it could be well said, "His word was as good as his bond.
He was president of the First National Bank of Cherry Tree from the time of its incorporation in 1903 until his death. In matters of local interest he was ever wide awake and ready to promote anything for the good of the public, but often laughlingly remarked that the most honorable office to which he could be elected in local politics was "overseer of the poor," of which he held quite often. He was a Democrat, and seemed proud of that fact, although hopelessly in the minority in his village. He was a member of the Noble Lodge of Masons, Curwinsville, P Moshannon Commandery, Phillipsburg, and Williamsport Consistory, and Jaffa, Temple, Altoona.
He and his wife were members of the M. P. Church. He died at his residence in Cherry Tree, Pa, March 5, 1912, and was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, the Mason conducting the burial. Porter and Margaret Kinports had ten children.

Individual Note: Emanuel's parents were of German descent and farmers. With them he spent the early part of his life, engaged in attending school and working on the farm. After receiving a liberal education, he began teaching school in 1858, which occupation he followed until September 1862, the last being the select school of Cherry Tree, Pa. Closing his school he enlisted in the Army on Sept. 7, 1862. Shortly after going out he was promoted corporal, and held that position until May 2, 1863, when while on the battlefield of Chancellorsville he was promoted to second sergeant, which place he held for some time, being then promoted to first sergeant, and occupying that position until near the close of the war, when he received the commission of captain. At the organization of the company he was chosen company clerk, and occupied that position until the dissolution of the company at Harrisburg, Pa. June 1, 1865. During the war he was engaged in 17 battles, being the first man to mount the enemy's works at Hatcher's Run, Feb. 5, 1865. He was also present at the surrender of General Lee to General Grant at Appomattox, Va., April 9, 1865.
A few weeks after returning from the army in 1865 he was nominated for and duly elected to the office of County Auditor in Cabria County for a term of three years. Finding that the duties of the office interfered with the prosecution of his studies, after serving for one year he resigned.
He first commenced the study of anatomy and physiology in 1860, but never regularly entered the office of any physician until his return from the army in 1865, when he registered and studied with the late R. S. Bunn, M. D., of Ebensburg, Pa. In October 1866 he matriculated in both Jefferson Medical College and Lying-in charity, of Philadelphia, receiving his diploma from each of these institutions in 1868, doctor of medicine from Jefferson Medical College Mar. 7, 1868.
In about two weeks after graduation he located to practice his profession in Cherry Tree, Indiana Co., Pa. On July 7, 1868 he was married to Lucy M., daughter of the late John and Mary Kinports, of Cherry Tree borough. He remained there engaging in general practice, but giving particular attention to gynealogy and disease of children. In 1870 he became a member of the Indiana County Medical Society, and in 1876 became a permanent member of the State Medical Soc. of Penna., and of the American Medical Assoc., representing the county in the former once and the latter twice. He filled several offices in the Indiana County Medical Society, being the president in 1879. He took a very active part in education, contributing to schools and improvising plans to facilitate teaching in the local schools, serving as Director of the Cherry Tree Male and Female College and one of the faculty during its existence, also on school board, sometime as secretary. He was one of the organizers of the Cherry TTree Scientific Lecture Club, lecturing on anatomy and physiology.
About 1879 he moved to Chambersburg, Pa. and set up practice there, spending the last ten years of his life at that place.
